Changes in Developmental Milestones…
For the first time in years, the CDC along with American Academy of Pediatrics have updated the “checklist” to follow for your child’s developmental milestones. These milestones were created to have a general idea of how your baby is doing compared to others. However we all know not all children are the same and that’s okay! The bigger purpose of these updates guidelines are to identify as quickly as possible the needs for Early Intervention for a particular skill set. For example, a child who might be slower to speak and communicate would benefit from speech therapy to improve language development. The experts also stated that their hope for this update was to also identify children that may be on the spectrum for Autism. With this population, Early Intervention is even more crucial. We need to equip children with ASD with the tools to communicate and engage with others. The biggest changes from these updates was the rise in percentage of children who typically meet their milestones from 50 percent to 75 percent to make it less ambiguous in identifying delays.
